What is the National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS)?
The National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) was established in 2008 by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) in partnership with the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). NEHS is open to both public and nonpublic elementary school students. Students are given recognition for their commitment to living by the Four Pillars: scholarship, responsibility, leadership, and service.
Who is Eligible for NEHS?
- Students in grades 4, 5, and 6 that have been enrolled at EACS for a minimum of (1) trimester.
- Transfer students from another chapter.
- Students with a cumulative GPA of 85 or higher after trimester 2.
- Students with no suspensions and no more than (1) discipline referral at the time of consideration.
- Students who have demonstrated responsibility, leadership, and community service.
What is the process for consideration and induction?
- After the 2nd trimester, the faculty council will identify scholars that meet the minimum requirement for scholarship; an 85 cumulative GPA or higher.
- Scholars who meet the requirement for scholarship will be considered Candidates for Membership.
- Candidates for Membership will be invited to complete a NEHS Candidate Cover Letter and Form detailing their commitment to living by the Four Pillars: scholarship, responsibility, leadership, and service. A personal statement and faculty input will also be considered.
- The faculty council will review all Candidates for Membership and select scholars that have met all requirements.
- Scholars become active members of the chapter during a special induction ceremony during the latter half of the year.
What Happens After Induction?
- Students attend a NEHS meeting monthly.
- Students plan and organize schoolwide and community service events and activities.
- Students have the opportunity to serve as Student Officers.
- Students are expected to maintain a 85 percent or higher cumulative GPA for the remainder of their elementary career (Grades 4-6 for the purposes of NEHS).
* Induction happens during the latter half of the year. As a result, inductees are introduced to the full NEHS experience the following year. For example, 4th grade inductees will have 2 full years of active service and 5th grade inductees will have 1 full year of active service. Unfortunately, 6th grade inductees will only be active members for the remainder of the inducted year. Thereafter, 6th graders will be considered Graduate Members (alumni). Nonetheless, induction is a great honor and 6th graders are encouraged to accept invitation for membership.
