Curriculum & Instruction at Empowerment Academy
At Empowerment Academy Charter School, our curriculum is fully aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) and describes in detail what students should know and understand by the conclusion of each grade level in each subject area. The NJSLS require that all students meet specific benchmarks in key areas of Mathematics, Science, English Language Arts, Social Studies, Visual & Performing Arts, Health & Physical Education, World Languages, and Career Readiness. At EA, our dedicated team of educators is committed to providing a stimulating and inclusive learning environment, empowering students to explore, discover and excel. From rigorous core subjects to enriching extracurricular activities, we strive to fulfill our mission of leading our scholars to experience a happy, contributory life!
Developing strong values, character, confidence and initiative in our scholars is important to our mission. Hence, our curriculum also includes a Core Values and Character Development component which is addressed within our Community Meeting, Morning Meeting, and Closing Circle instructional periods and infused into instruction throughout the day (e.g., through taking advantage of “Teachable Moments”).
Throughout the academic year, our educators meet weekly in grade level or subject-based Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). Guided by assessment data, teachers may identify a problem with a curriculum’s scope and sequence across grade levels or a need for additional modifications to better serve scholars with special needs. This will be communicated to the relevant Department Chairs and Deans and appropriate curriculum revisions will be made.
