At Empowerment Academy Charter School, we work hard to create a fun, caring environment that makes our scholars enjoy school — and honoring their parents’ trust, we strive to help our scholars develop positive values and worthy goals for their lives.

We have high expectations for our scholars and an accelerated curriculum that challenges them. But we never let a scholar be defeated by the challenge.

Instead, we monitor each scholar’s learning growth and the minute we see a scholar struggling, we provide tutoring or other kinds of assistance that result in the scholar mastering skills he or she may have initially found difficult.

This goes beyond teaching academic skills. Our scholars develop an experience-based confidence that with perseverance, and by reaching out for assistance when necessary, they can overcome even the most difficult of challenges…

Welcome to Empowerment Academy Charter School! I am thrilled to lead our beautiful school which was founded in 2015, as a tuition free, public charter school in the vibrant and diverse Jersey City community. At Empowerment Academy, we know the impact of educating young children in our society and the positive effect they will have on the international community. Here’s what makes our school different:

• A carefully sequenced curriculum, aligned with all state and common core standards
• A primary grade pedagogy that makes use of delivery techniques borrowed from children’s theater such as exaggerated expression, choral response, song and rhyme

• A novel system of class prefects and peer tutoring

• Teacher training in, and use of, Teach Like a Champion pedagogical techniques within an innovative, highly-effective teach cycle that ends almost every lesson with a check for understanding

It is this commitment to educating the young boys and girls of this city that continues our work. This year we are celebrating our second year of providing a unique and exciting educational option to our students and their families. Our first cohort of students performed exceptionally well on the nationally normed Terra Nova assessments which showed that Empowerment Academy scholars are making learning gains that are 60% faster than the average in America’s public schools!

My answer is simple: Empowerment Academy is a school which sets very high expectations for its students—ethically, academically and in character —but one in which teachers work with amazing diligence and care to help all students meet those expectations. It is a school whose wide offerings in academics, the arts, and extracurricular activities give students incredible opportunities to discover their unique gifts and talents and to develop the confidence that grows from knowing that they have something of value to contribute to others. And for parents who want their children challenged with high expectations in a warm, supportive environment, Empowerment Academy is the best investment in a child’s future. Our model is designed to empower each student to build strong character, demonstrate critical thinking, possess a core body of knowledge, and be on predictive path for academic success and success in life! 

As you walk into our building you will be introduced to our warm and joyful school culture built on the notion that all children can be empowered to achieve and contribute greatly to the world! Our classrooms are named after colleges and universities so that our students learn early on that the future is full of opportunities for those who work hard.

Families are essential partners in this work, and we provide numerous opportunities for families to be actively involved in their children’s education. Beginning with daily parent communication, monthly school & family events, parent information workshops and field trips; EACS truly values our collaborative relationship with families.
